Some Foreigners’ Perceptions Of The Dominican Republic (Hilarious Topic)

As I have mentioned before, I am Dominican, I have lived in the city of Santo Domingo all my life, for better or worse, I do not consider myself a nationalist, whenever I see a foreign opinion of the Dominican Republic that is not based on hate or destructive criticism I find it hilarious.

Here is an example:

I like video games and wrestling, and by chance, I came across an old arcade fighting game with fighters from different parts of the world.

I discovered that in that game there is a character from “Santo Domingo” which caught my attention and I felt cool because I saw the name of the city and the flag of the country.

King Rasta is the name of a fighting game character from Santo Domingo.

And I was thinking, “Wow, cool, a fighting character based on a guy from my city!”, so far so good, but my face of astonishment and satisfaction changed when I changed the screen and went to the stage of the character.

That is, if you are not familiar with fighting games, whenever you select the stage of a character, elements representative of the city or country where the character comes from are adopted.

Well, King Rata’s stage from Santo Domingo, was nothing more and nothing less than a jungle, full of monkeys, with a lake in the background, the fighting ring was built with wood and vines, everything looked rustic and prehistoric, that stage caused me a super hilarious reaction.

In the Dominican Republic there are not even monkeys in natural habitat, in the only two places where you can see monkeys here is in the zoo, and in a place in Punta Cana called Monkey Land, but it is something artificially created.

I didn’t feel offended at all, I rather thought, “the person who designed this stage doesn’t know anything about Santo Domingo or the Dominican Republic”.

Actually, although I found it hilarious because I live in Santo Domingo and I know the city and the country very well, many foreigners imagine the Dominican Republic just like that, like a jungle full of monkeys and wild animals.

Although the Dominican Republic has had a slow development, it is actually a fairly developed country, in fact, in the city of Santo Domingo there are already underground subway lines, cable cars, and its development in recent years has grown at a high level.

The internet reaches almost every corner of the country, although it is true that there are many uninhabited green areas, in reference to the cities, they are typical Latin American cities with all the services and amenities you can imagine.

To finish with the topic, at the end of the character’s fight, a monster from the Ness Lagoon comes out of the lake, which made me crack up laughing, so, in Santo Domingo, we have jungles, monkeys, and monsters from the Ness Lagoon, hilarious!
